Interested in schizophrenia (SZ) research? SZ, a disease affecting individual’s perception of reality and social behavior, has been associated with altered dopamine (DA) neurotransmitter activity and aberrant synaptic pruning. Oversensitivity of certain DA receptors or excess availability of the neurotransmitter itself is believed to be one of the causal factors in schizophrenia. The most common anti-psychotic medication used to treat SZ are dopamine antagonists which help reduce DA activity. Excessive synaptic elimination is due to a defect in the pruning program which leads to fewer synaptic connections in multiple regions of the brain and loss of the grey matter. Studies suggest that excessive complement activity plays an important role in reducing the number of synapses in the brain of SZ patients. BioLegend is proud to offer antibodies for detection of components of the complement system, dopaminergic neuron markers, dopamine receptors and proteins involved in dopamine trafficking.
